NextGenTel uses IBM Tivoli Netcool

About NextGenTel

NextGenTel is the main challenger in broadband and broadband services in Norway. The company is wholly owned by TeliaSonera AB, the leading Nordic and Baltic telecommunications company.

NextGenTel delivers solutions tailored to customer needs, from high-speed broadband at home with the largest TV portal, to integrated data communications solutions for the enterprise market in collaboration with partners.

Overview

In 2007, NextGenTel completed a common alarm management initiative, with IBM Tivoli Netcool software at its core, which helped improve service delivery while controlling operational costs. In the following years, fixed operations required a further consolidation of network and service assurance tools and processes.

In 2012, after a detailed market study, NextGenTel decided to standardise on Tivoli Netcool across all network domains, replacing the incumbent solutions in a phased manner with the help of an IBM Business Partner.

Challenge

Integrate a telecom’s fault, and service status across an increasingly complex, converged network infrastructure to help operational staff improve service delivery.

Solution

A common service management platform that provides a service oriented overview of fixed line infrastructures, plus value added services.

NextGenTel’s multiple network management systems and service management solution were not sufficiently equipped to meet the challenge of increased complexity and needed an upgrade. NextGenTel recognised the need for a centralised, redundant, flexible, efficient and reliable service assurance system for monitoring existing and future networks. In response, they launched an initiative to assess how to achieve “One Service Assurance” solution, with low risk, low TCO, and short time-to-value.

IBM Tivoli Netcool was selected over the competition having been seen to demonstrate better value in all criteria. The solution was implemented by IBM Business partner Compose IT during a 3 month project which included migration from older BSM platforms and integration with NextGenTel’s customer and configuration databases.

Benefits

The unified assurance of wireless and wireline networks and services, based on Tivoli Netcool software, has delivered solid operating benefits and efficiencies to NextGenTel in a short span of time.

These benefits include:
• Improved and rapid fault detection and resolution
• Consolidated operations management and fault correlation
• Increased scalability and flexibility
• Advanced topology views of the IT infrastructure
• Presentation Layer with Incident and Service Visibility

Marius Myrbakk adds, “The Tivoli Netcool-based common alarm management initiative is flexible enough to adapt and grow with us. Tivoli Netcool software enables us to better manage service levels and to better deliver against customer expectations while controlling our operating costs and improving operating efficiency.”
